Atiku Questions Tinubu’s UNGA Absence
Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Tinubu’s absence marks the third consecutive UNGA he has missed since 2024.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioned the repeated absence and demanded an explanation. Nigeria’s UN envoy, Jimoh Ibrahim, defended the decision, saying it is normal for presidents to delegate representation and that Shettima will fully represent Nigeria.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and hold high level diplomatic meetings during the September 22 to 28 UNGA session.

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso says he is willing to reconcile with Governor Abba Yusuf despite their political differences.
Kwankwaso said he still has affection for Yusuf and is not a vengeful person, adding that he has also forgiven former governor Abdullahi Ganduje for past disagreements.
Sowore Alleges Tinubu Is Receiving Treatment In France
African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is receiving medical treatment in France, contradicting the Presidency’s position that he is on annual leave.
Sowore also linked Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA to alleged concerns about legal action in the United States. The claims have not been independently established.
Only Eight Nigerian Sectors Grow Above 5%
The Nigerian Economic Summit Group says only eight sectors recorded growth above 5 percent in the second quarter of 2026, highlighting uneven economic expansion.
Nigeria’s GDP grew by 4.43 percent year on year, up from 4.23 percent in Q2 2025. NESG identified insecurity, poor electricity supply, limited access to finance and infrastructure gaps as major challenges affecting growth.
