Afrobeats is taking another major step onto the global stage, and this time, Nigeria will have two of its biggest music stars representing the culture at NFL international games. Burna Boy and Ayra Starr are set to headline NFL halftime shows in Paris and London respectively, giving Nigerian music two major moments during the league’s 2026 international season.

Burna Boy will take the stage at Stade de France in Paris on October 25, while Ayra Starr will perform at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on October 11.

For Afrobeats, the significance goes beyond two performances. It is another indication of how deeply African music has entered the global entertainment conversation.

Burna Boy takes over Paris

Burna Boy will headline the halftime show at the 2026 NFL Paris Game, where the Pittsburgh Steelers will face the New Orleans Saints on October 25. The game will make history as the first regular season NFL game played in France, with Stade de France providing the backdrop for the occasion.

For Burna Boy, however, the venue is already familiar territory. In April 2025, the Nigerian superstar became the first African artist to headline a solo concert at Stade de France, performing before a sold out crowd of 80,000 people.

Now he is returning to the same stadium, this time as the face of the entertainment programme for the NFL’s historic arrival in France. “Paris gave me one of the biggest nights of my career,” Burna Boy said following the announcement, adding that the opportunity allows him to represent African music on another major global stage.

The NFL also pointed to Paris’ strong connection with African music and Burna Boy’s previous history at the stadium when announcing the decision.

Ayra Starr brings Starrgirl to London

Before Burna Boy takes over Paris, another Nigerian superstar will already have taken the NFL stage in London. Ayra Starr will headline the halftime show at the NFL London Game on October 11, when the Philadelphia Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It comes at an interesting moment in Ayra’s career. The Beninese Nigerian singer recently released her third studio album, Starrgirl, featuring collaborations with artists including Wizkid, ZAYN and Leon Thomas.

The NFL says Ayra has accumulated more than seven billion global streams and one billion YouTube views since her debut in 2021. She has also earned Grammy nominations and won the BET Award for Best International Act.

For Ayra, the London performance will provide another opportunity to introduce her sound to an enormous international sporting audience. And London is particularly significant. The city has long been one of the strongest international markets for African music, with a huge Nigerian and wider African diaspora community.

Two Nigerians, two cities, one global stage

The fascinating part of this story is the timing. On October 11, Ayra Starr will take the NFL stage in London. Two weeks later, on October 25, Burna Boy will headline the NFL’s first regular season game in Paris. That puts two Nigerian Afrobeats stars at two major NFL international events within the same month.

The NFL itself describes its 2026 international programme as its most international season yet, with nine regular season games across seven countries and four continents. New international markets this season include Australia, Brazil and France.

The league has also announced a record seven halftime shows for its international games, featuring artists from different parts of the world.

But for Nigerian music, having Burna Boy and Ayra Starr among those performers is particularly significant.

Afrobeats keeps crossing borders

There was a time when Nigerian music’s biggest international moments were largely concentrated within African markets and diaspora communities. That has changed dramatically.

Today, Nigerian artists are performing at some of the world’s biggest festivals, arenas, awards ceremonies and sporting events. Burna Boy has been one of the most visible faces of that expansion, taking Afrofusion to major stages across the world. Ayra Starr represents another generation of Nigerian artists growing up in an era where global audiences are already familiar with Afrobeats.

Their NFL appearances therefore tell two different but connected stories. While Burna represents the generation that helped push Nigerian music deeper into the global mainstream, Ayra represents the generation taking that momentum even further.

The NFL is looking beyond American audiences

The NFL’s decision to expand its international games is also changing the entertainment surrounding those events. The 2026 international schedule includes games in Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City. And the halftime performers reflect that international approach.

The lineup includes the Jonas Brothers in Melbourne, Ricky Martin and Pedro Sampaio in Rio, Ayra Starr in London, Burna Boy in Paris, Cage The Elephant in Munich and The Warning in Mexico City.

The music is becoming part of the NFL’s international expansion strategy. For Afrobeats, that creates another enormous platform.

Nigeria will be watching

When Ayra Starr walks onto the field at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 11, Nigerian music fans will be watching. Two weeks later, the attention returns to Paris as Burna Boy takes over Stade de France. Different artists, different cities, different generations. But the same Nigerian musical identity travelling further around the world. And perhaps that is the most interesting part of the story.

The question is no longer whether Afrobeats belongs on the world’s biggest stages. It is becoming a question of which global stage Nigerian artists will appear on next. For now, London and Paris are calling. And Nigeria will be watching.
