Funke Akindele may be ready to revisit one of the movies that helped shape her journey as a filmmaker. The award winning actress and producer has sparked excitement among Nollywood fans after responding to a social media post about her 2009 Yoruba epic Àpáàdì, suggesting that a remake could be worth considering.

A fan recently shared the original Àpáàdì movie poster on X and tagged Akindele while reminiscing about the film. The actress responded with a short but intriguing message:  “A remake won’t be a bad idea.”

That single sentence was enough to send fans into nostalgia mode, with many immediately calling for the return of the Yoruba classic.

Released in 2009, Àpáàdì was a Yoruba language historical drama and one of the early productions associated with Akindele’s work as a producer.

The film was produced by Akindele under Scene One Productions and directed by Abiodun Olanrewaju. Akindele also appeared in the movie as the king’s niece.

It featured an impressive collection of Yoruba cinema veterans, including Femi Adebayo, Adebayo Salami, Peter Fatomilola, Yinka Quadri, Taiwo Hassan, Peju Ogunmola, Opeyemi Ayeola and Ronke Odusanya. It’s story revolves around a troubled kingdom, royal conflict and supernatural consequences, with the royal household facing the responsibility of saving the kingdom from impending disaster.

Fans Want the Classic Back

Akindele’s comment immediately opened the door to a flood of reactions from fans who remembered the film fondly. Some followers asked for a full remake, while others suggested that the story could work even better as a television or streaming series.

The conversation also moved beyond Àpáàdì, with fans asking Akindele to revisit other older Yoruba titles from her career, including Ajẹ̀ Mẹtta.

For many viewers, the excitement is not simply about seeing an old movie recreated. It is about seeing a new generation of actors and filmmakers reinterpret stories that were part of their childhood.

From Yoruba Epic to Modern Nollywood

A remake of Àpáàdì would also arrive at an interesting point in Akindele’s career. The filmmaker has increasingly moved between comedy, drama, large scale commercial productions and stories rooted in Nigerian culture.

Her recent projects include Everybody Loves Jenifa, while her upcoming film The Four: No One Fights Alone is scheduled for a global cinema release on December 11, 2026.

A return to Àpáàdì would therefore represent something different, taking one of her earlier Yoruba productions and potentially giving it the scale, cinematography and production techniques available to contemporary Nollywood.

But There Is No Official Remake Announcement Yet

For now, fans may need to keep their excitement in check. Akindele has not announced that production of an Àpáàdì remake has officially begun. She has also not announced a release date, new cast, director or production schedule. Her comment simply indicates that she does not consider the idea a bad one.

But considering how quickly fans have responded, the message has certainly opened the conversation. And if Akindele eventually decides to bring Àpáàdì back to the screen, there will already be an audience waiting.

For now, the remake remains an idea. But Funke Akindele has clearly left the door open.
