The Federal Government has officially declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the celebration of Eid ul Adha.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani in Abuja.

According to the statement, the declaration reflects the government’s recognition of the religious importance of the celebration and its respect for millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the wider Islamic community worldwide in observing the occasion.

Tunji Ojo extended the Federal Government’s greetings and goodwill to Muslims both within Nigeria and across the diaspora, describing Eid ul Adha as a deeply meaningful event centered on sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion toward others.

The government also encouraged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and thoughtful reflection, while seeking divine direction for the country in its pursuit of peace, security, and national progress.

The statement added that the spirit of the celebration should strengthen unity, shared humanity, and peaceful coexistence among citizens.

The Federal Government described Eid ul Adha as an important religious celebration built around values of faith, sacrifice, compassion, and unity, while encouraging Nigerians to strengthen tolerance and peaceful coexistence as the nation continues to navigate economic and security challenges.

With the announcement of a two day public holiday, movement across different parts of the country is expected to rise significantly as many families prepare to travel and celebrate with loved ones. Transport terminals, major markets, and livestock centres have already begun experiencing increased activities as preparations gather momentum.

In many parts of northern Nigeria, especially communities where the festival is traditionally observed on a large scale, preparations have intensified in recent days. Traders are reporting growing demand for rams and essential food items, although rising costs and economic concerns continue to influence purchasing decisions for many households.

Security agencies are also expected to increase monitoring efforts and deploy personnel to strategic locations including prayer grounds, highways, and public spaces to maintain safety and ensure smooth celebrations nationwide.

Celebrated by Muslims around the world, Eid ul Adha marks Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s instruction before a ram was provided as a substitute through divine intervention.

The celebration is commonly marked by prayers, the sacrifice of animals, acts of charity, and family gatherings that strengthen community bonds.

The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence, while extending warm wishes to Muslims across the country for a joyful and spiritually rewarding celebration.
