BET Awards 2026 ended on a disappointing note for Nigerian music fans as Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Asake failed to win any award despite earning six nominations. For the first time in several years, Nigeria’s biggest music stars walked away from the BET Awards without a single trophy.

Tems, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Asake arrived at the 2026 BET Awards carrying the hopes of millions of Afrobeats fans around the world. Together, they earned six nominations across some of the ceremony’s biggest categories, proving once again that Nigerian music remains a dominant force on the global stage. However, when the winners were announced, none of them made it to the podium.

The awards ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, celebrated excellence in music, entertainment and sports. While American stars such as Teyana Taylor, Clipse and Kehlani enjoyed memorable nights, Nigeria’s representatives experienced an unexpected shutout despite their impressive year.

Tems entered the ceremony as Nigeria’s most nominated artist with three nominations. She was recognized in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category, received a BET Her Award nomination for her song First, and also earned a Viewers’ Choice Award nomination for Raindance, her collaboration with British rapper Dave.

Despite her impressive showing, Tems was unable to convert any of the nominations into victories. Kehlani won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Doechii and SZA claimed the BET Her Award, while Mariah the Scientist took home the Viewers’ Choice Award. Still, Tems remained one of the highlights of the night after delivering a live performance that drew praise from fans and attendees.

BET Awards 2026: Wizkid and Asake Miss Out

Fresh from their successful collaboration, Wizkid and Asake earned a joint nomination in the Best Group category. The nomination reflected the growing global appeal of their partnership and further reinforced Nigeria’s influence in contemporary music.

However, the award ultimately went to hip hop duo Clipse, who enjoyed one of the biggest nights of the ceremony after collecting multiple awards.

BET Awards 2026: Burna Boy Falls Short

Burna Boy also entered the night with hopes of extending his impressive BET legacy. His collaboration with Gunna on WGFT secured a nomination for Best Collaboration.

The category was eventually won by Clipse and Kendrick Lamar for Chains & Whips, leaving Burna Boy without another international trophy this year.

A Reminder That Global Recognition Is Not Guaranteed

Although the results were disappointing for Nigerian fans, the nominations themselves highlight the continued strength of Afrobeats on the global stage.

Only a handful of countries consistently produce artists capable of competing in major international award shows year after year. Nigeria remains one of them. From Burna Boy and Wizkid to Tems and Asake, Nigerian musicians continue to command worldwide attention, sell out arenas and dominate streaming platforms, even when award victories prove elusive.

The 2026 ceremony may have ended without a Nigerian winner, but it also reinforced one important fact. Nigerian music is no longer chasing global recognition. It already has it. The next challenge is turning that influence into more victories on one of Black entertainment’s biggest stages.
